Joanie's Story: Why We Built Mira

At 80, Joanie was living independently in the home she'd shared with her late husband for over 40 years. But one October morning, everything changed with a simple slip in her bathroom.

The fall was devastating. It smashed her femur and severely affected both her hip and knee. The impact was so severe that lying on that cold floor for three hours, unable to reach her pendant alarm charging in the kitchen, Joanie experienced something that would haunt her long after her physical injuries healed: the terror of being completely helpless and alone.

"I kept thinking, what if no one finds me? What if this is how it ends, not from the fall, but from lying here, forgotten?"

The emergency surgery was successful. The hospital got her patched up quickly with metal rods and plates. Like most hip patients, she was discharged after just three days. But the real challenge was just beginning.
